Obesity has affected many people for a long time, but every year it increases more rapidly. Today, obesity affects about 2 billion people worldwide. That’s about 30% of people. There are many reasons why someone can become obese such as depression or because of a medical issue. Obesity carries an abundance of malicious symptoms. These include fatigue, joint and bone pain, and lack of confidence and self-esteem. Obesity can break down the protective blood-brain barrier that protects the brain that leads to problems with learning and memory.
“We know that obesity and insulin resistance break down the blood-brain barrier in humans and animal models, but exactly how has remained a mystery,” says Dr. Alexis M. Stranahan, a neuroscientist in the MCG Department of Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine at Augusta University.
Adenosine, a neurotransmitter helps sleep and helps regulate our blood pressure. Adenosine also activates receptors Adora1a and Adora2a on endothelial cells which aids healthy relationships between brain activity and blood flow.
However, there comes a problem when there’s a constant activation of these receptors and this occurs with obesity.
There has been evidence of people with obesity and diabetes have higher rates of cognitive impairment. The most structural change of this event occurs in the hippocampus, the place for learning and memory. Obese people usually have a high concentration of fat, and fat is known to be an inflammatory, however, it has been shown that reducing chronic inflammation in the brain aids in preventing obesity-related memory loss.
In an experiment, mice were fed a high-fat diet and in two weeks they became fat. When the researchers compared the mice fed the high-fat diet to the mice fed the normal diet, it was evident that there was an increased permeability of blood vessels in the mice fed a high-fat diet.
There is still an abundance of things that can be learned about obesity, and there’s a lot of things you can do to prevent yourself from becoming obese. Stay healthy and make logical choices. It’s worth it in the end.
