What are Fox nuts?

Growing up, I recall my mother roasting a good amount of light weighted fox nuts in ghee with a pinch of salt and serving us whenever the hunger hits in. The roasted fox nuts made an astonishing snack which was light, crispy and healthy as well. We also call them fox nuts, Euryale ferox, lotus seeds, gorgon nuts, and phool fox nuts. We often use foxnuts in few of our Indian sweets and savories and are also eaten as an evening tea-time snack. Also known as Makana.

Only 40% of us would have known that these are a part of the lotus flower. The flower which is not only beautiful but has a lot to offer, including foxnuts. Fox nuts high production is in the state of Bihar in India, Korea, and Japan along with a few parts of eastern Russia.

We can have it in the roasted or fried form, the roasted form is more advisable to those who are health conscious. It can be stored for a long time but only in airtight containers else, it will lose its crisp. It has various medicinal properties too that’s why Chinese use foxnuts as a medicine. Also brings strengthen to spleen and kidneys.

It contains 65% carbs, 2% healthy fat and 15% proteins. Lotus seeds are known for its properties such as healing property due to which it is used in Chinese and Indian medicine and nutritional properties.

It work as an anti-oxidant, anti-hypertensive and anti-spasmodic. Regular consumption of this may help in treating diarrhea, insomnia, dysmenorrhea, atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, and heart diseases.

A handful of this provides 332 calories out of which only 16 calories are fat. Foxnuts are free from cholesterol and trans fats. Only 100 grams of foxnuts are fully loaded with 102 mg omega 3 fatty acids.

Since they are naturally low in calories and sodium, the number of calories your fox nuts snack is going to have is determined by how you prepare it for eating.

We have several popular ways to consume these in the weight loss process:

Put fox nutson a non-stick pan or griddle and roast them on a low flame until they turn slightly brown. Be careful while moderating the flame, else foxnuts can burn also. Once you are done with roasting roasted transfer them in an air-tight container(else it will loose their crisp) and keep the container in a dry place.

If you’re not against to a bit of healthy fat, then you can add a tablespoon of Ghee or coconut oil to your pan, before placing the foxnuts. You can also add a bit of salt and black pepper but keep in mind to avoid adding any artificial or salty flavorings and seasonings.

If plain fox nuts are not of your flavor, you can make flavored fox nuts in a healthy way. You just need to roast them in ghee and flavor them with good spices and condiments like mint leaves, curry leaves, coriander powder, garlic powder, turmeric powder, green chilies. You can also add peanuts, cashews, and almonds to the mixture to add a bit more crunch and bring more nutrition to the snack.

Make sure you add all natural spices that aid weight loss to your roasted foxnuts. Although these are beneficial for weight loss, you may want to control the portion that you eat in a day. Treat foxnuts s as mid-meal snacks to take care of untimely cravings only and not as an entire meal. If you want to lose weight in a healthy way, it is recommended to never skip your meals. If you are on a low-carbohydrate diet, you may want to have them sparingly.
