How To Help Your Child Develop A Healthy Speaking Pattern

San Gabriel speech therapy helps children use speech to be able to communicate confidently.

It is extremely important to develop a healthy speech pattern if a child is having problems. Parents and children alike may be feeling the pressure of this problem. However, they must both understand that this is an issue where no one is at fault. Some children just develop at different stages. As a parent, there are some steps you can take to help your child develop a healthy speaking habit. Our San Gabriel speech therapy advises the following:

First Two Years

  • Say simple sounds and see if the baby responds back
  • Mimic some sort of conversation with the baby
  • Make faces at the baby so it can laugh
  • Play little games like peek-a-boo
  • Always talk to the baby
  • Read to the child and help them learn the sounds with the words

Ages 2–4

  • Make sure to not have a sloppy speech in front of the child
  • Repeat speech as your child talks to you
  • Mix in adult words with baby words too
  • Try to help the child organize their thoughts
  • Try to introduce new words
  • Play the child music so they hear more words and sounds
  • Talk about people that the child has interaction with

Ages 4–6

  • Be sure to gain attention from the child
  • Give praise and encouragement when the child succeeds and fails
  • Use directions to where things are
  • Try to give very simple tasks to the child
  • Learn about everyday things
  • Go through your day with the child so they understand it better

The best way to help the child’s speech development is to include them in every part of the parent’s life. Children, like most people, learn from observation. They see things done a certain way and they learn to do things that same way. Each stage is different in how the parent should communicate with the child, and that is why San Gabriel speech therapy has provided details for the best way to go about it.
