How to Be a Mindful Eater
Are you considering a more mindful diet? It is often said, “You are what you eat,” and there is truth in these words. You can’t buy health with money, and for a healthy mental state you need a healthy body first. That’s why mindfulness in your daily meals is so important. Your health is built from your daily habits and isn’t something you can fix overnight.
Like in many religions, those of the Buddhist faith have a set of precepts (rules) to follow as part of their religion. Of these guidelines on how to live your daily life, one is the precept to “abstain from taking life”. This is a rule that states you should abstain from killing living things. It is said that any living creature has the potential to find enlightenment and become a Buddha. So in the Buddhist faith it is considered a deep sin to thoughtlessly take life away.
However, there are times when this rule is broken. Because we must take the lives of other creatures to live. Regardless of whether you eat meat, or you are a vegetarian or a vegan, we all take the lives of plants and animals to live. What’s important is not to take more than you need. In Buddhism it is taught that we should be thankful for all the life around us and cherish the life we have thanks to others. The modern world is filled with so many things, but it is important to find contentment and satisfaction with what you have without desiring more. We must learn to control ourselves, to be satisfied when we’ve had enough, and not give in to our never-ending desires. This may seem like a difficult subject to bring into your daily life, but perhaps you can start by reviewing your daily meals and making more mindful diet choices.
